Speaking from Experience - Problems and Messages

3 Problems that can be addressed -

MONEY
Reasons: It's one of the main problems faced by students, and although I've been lucky with my money because I work and have a generous family, I know other students who struggle and it can be quite restricting - It's even more relevant to the students coming from this year because of the tuition fee rise - Being responsible with money is a skill that we need for the rest of our adult lives, so perfecting it at uni can take the pressure off when you're in the big bad world with no financial help -

Outcomes/Methods of delivery: Budget app - A booklet showing students the best deals available at different shops - An advisory video -

HOMESICKNESS
Reasons: Despite me going home every weekend, this is one of things I've struggled with most, because my job, my family and boyfriend are in Chorley, it still feels like my life is there, and I'm just here  to work. Sometimes it can feel like I'm missing out on my life whilst I'm here. - This is a problem a lot of people are dealing with in their first few weeks of being away from their family, whether they're homesick because they miss their mum's cooking, their friends or their own bed - Homesickness can create a lot of stress, which affect your work in a negative way, and leave you feeling overwhelmed -

Outcomes/Method of delivery: An interactive product that gives reasons to be glad to be away from home - A booklet of tips - A comfort pack -

TIME MANAGEMENT
Reasons: This is an intense course, and it's very easy to fall behind - Once you've fallen behind, you become no fun and also tend to sap the fun out of every other room you enter - If you spend too much time on working, then you tend to forget about other important aspects of life, such as showering and eating - Time management is a skill we need to learn to prepare ourselves for working in a real design environment, where if you're running late, you'll be costing the clients/your company money - Although being disciplined with time is difficult, it pays off when you get a good mark or someone likes your work - Everyone can relate to struggling with time management, especially with all the distractions we have, like friends, social networking, tv, social lives etc.

Outcomes/Method of delivery: A wall planner - A to do list diary - A time management app - A series of posters for the studio that advertise the benefits of doing your work - Mock motivational posters

Messages

DON'T PANIC/TAKE THE FIRST YEAR SO SERIOUSLY
Reasons: This is definitely a message I should have heeded, as I tend to worry so much about the workload, when in fact, this year is all about learning and making mistakes whilst you still can, and have it not affect your final degree classification - Putting too much pressure on yourself is unhealthy in general - It gets so much worse in the second and third year, so now is the time to enjoy student life whilst you can - You could take the first year so seriously, get an amazing grade, and then just have the added pressure of topping the work you've done in the first year in the years after - Although you should adhere to the studio deadlines, so long as everything is in order before the module hand in, and you have made an effort, then the world is not going to end if something goes wrong.

Outcomes/Methods of delivery: A panic flowchart - An interactive fortune teller - Fortune cookies that offer words of wisdom about your work - A pack of postcards with 10 silly things to do in your first year to prevent you taking it too seriously - A stress ball/survival kit

DO YOUR RESEARCH
Reasons: Research is the best way to know what you're up against in the real design world, and although it can be scary, it should make you want to be better - Research is part of the marked criteria of the briefs - Researching can only make your designs better, plus it doesn't take that long - As a designer, you are communicating a message, and if you don't research that message properly, your design will flop, and you will feel like an idiot - Researching specific design skills and online tutorials can only mean improving yourself

Outcomes/Methods of delivery: A useful log of design websites that will aid their research - A poster in the studio to act as a reminder - An app that provides the user with a new skill or tutorial every day - A jokey book that details the life of someone who didn't do their research -

YOU DON'T HAVE TO ACT LIKE A STUDENT
Reasons: Even though you are a student, it doesn't mean you have to act like one - People generally hate students - Although you are studying, the tutors expect you to act like professionals, and you don't want to get in their bad books - If you were never a wild child before, theres no need to act like one now just to try and impress people, because you end up with the worst hangovers - Being a student isn't so great, you're poor, disrespected and you have to put up with noisy lairy guys who ring your doorbell at 5 in the morning, and you aren't being paid for all the work you're putting in - The more responsible you get now, the less of a shock to the system it is when you're in the real world

Outcomes/Methods of delivery - An advisory book - A joke video interviewing people who hate students - A student camouflage pack - A promotional poster - A screen printed laptop case
