Our PPP workshop this week continued on from the task we had been set previously, finding examples of magazines, books and general publishing. We each presented our findings, then collectively looked at observations we'd made, problems we found, and anything more we could have researched into.
Certain observations include the fact that many niche books are finished to a higher standard design wise than mainstream books, the magazines that are released more frequently are of less quality in terms of format, design etc, and reports generally contain far too much visual information, as if the company are trying too hard.
Some things we didn't know about our publication categories were that different magazine genres tend to have specific colour pallettes targeted for particular audiences, all books seem to use similar typefaces, travel books all employ similar conventional layouts, and sports programmes are often finished to a higher standard than many other events programmes such as the theatre and ballet.
We then reviewed our lists to create a range of points we would want to explore further, or that we felt were important in our findings.
Ours were
- Production cost in relation to retail value
- Investigate readership reports within large publishing companies
- Does cost dictate production from retail to sale.
- How far in advance do companies work on a particular project
- Investigate the production process from the graphic designers point of view.
